Why I Can’t Stop Listening to “Sure” by Freddy Washington Jr.

There are songs you listen to once… and then there are songs that listen to you. That’s how I felt the first time I heard “Sure” by Freddy Washington Jr. It wasn’t just good — it was grounding. The kind of track that settles into your spirit like a whispered prayer you didn’t realize you’d been praying. As soon as it ended, I hit replay. And then I hit replay again.

Who Is Freddy Washington Jr.?

According to MultiTracks.com, Freddy Washington Jr. is a New Jersey native whose passion for ministry started early in life, shaped by serving in his local church’s music ministry. That love for God and music became a calling — one that would eventually earn him Grammy, Stellar, and Dove Award nominations for his work with top artists across Gospel and Christian music.

Beyond the accolades, Freddy has built a global ministry. He’s traveled across the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean, leading worship, teaching choirs, and preaching the message of hope. You may have seen him on platforms like TBN, Daystar, or leading worship for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

He’s collaborated with everyone from CeCe Winans and Donnie McClurkin to Will Reagan, Da’ T.R.U.T.H., and the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir — crossing cultural, generational, and denominational lines to lift up the name of Jesus.

But more than the credits, Freddy Washington Jr. is a worship leader who knows how to tap into the deep well of human emotion and anchor it in eternal truth.

“I may be getting older… but only on the outside.”

Let’s start with this lyric from the first verse:

“I may be getting older. But only on the outside. Deep within my heart still lives the faith of a child.”

Whew. That line took me out — in the best way.

As someone who’s been walking with God for a while now, who has served behind the scenes of ministry and seen the beauty and the mess, I can say this with confidence: it’s easy to get jaded if you’re not careful.

Ministry can wear you down. Life can harden you. And even though you still believe, you start to believe with a limp.

But this lyric reminded me that childlike faith is still alive in me. Buried beneath the spreadsheets, the deadlines, the strategy decks, the stages and the struggle — there’s still a heart that believes God can do the impossible.

And it’s not naïve. It’s necessary.

“I’m settled, I’m confident, I’m sure…”

Then comes the chorus:

“I’m settled, I’m confident, I’m sure
Sure of every word
I’m resting on Your promises
I’m sure, sure of every word.”

There’s something so anthemic about that hook — but it’s not just sonically powerful. It’s spiritually anchoring.

I love the settledness of it. The unshaken assurance in God’s word. Because let’s be honest — in a world where doubt is trendy and second-guessing your calling is almost a rite of passage, this kind of declaration feels countercultural.

Personally, I’m in a season of believing God to bring to fruition some things He’s planted deep in my heart — both personally and professionally. Some promises have taken time. Some doors have stayed shut longer than I expected. But this chorus reminds me:

I can rest.
I don’t have to strive to make His word come true.
If He said it, He’ll do it. Full stop.

“I’ll never let go of Your hand.”

And then there’s the tag that undid me:

“I’ll never let go of Your hand.”

I don’t know about you, but that lyric? That’s personal. It reminded me that holding on to God isn’t about having all the answers. Sometimes, it’s just about having enough grace to say, “I’m still here.”

Freddy Washington Jr. in His Own Words

In an Instagram post, Washington wrote:

“I wrote this song as a reminder that [God’s] plans for your life are not at all fragile. Today you may feel forgotten… but you’re not. You may feel like it’s too late for God to do great things in your life… it’s not. The good news is, though God is not in a hurry, He is most certainly in control and perfectly faithful. The old church used to say ‘He’s a lawyer who has never lost a case and a doctor who has never lost a patient.’ I want you to know that every good thing that He has spoken over your life will one day be the very reality of your life no matter how impossible that seems. Nothing can stop it because nothing can stop Him… and of that you can be ‘SURE.'” 🙏🏾

That perspective doesn’t just shape the song — it amplifies its impact. You can hear every word sung with that kind of conviction.

Let Me Encourage You

If you’re reading this and you’re tired… still believing but with calloused hands and a weary heart… this song might be for you too.

Put “Sure” on repeat. Let it work on you. Let it remind you that:

  • You can still have childlike faith, even after life has tried to age your hope.
  • You can be settled in God’s word, even when circumstances are shaky.
  • You can hold on — not because you’re strong, but because He’s faithful.

You were never meant to perform your way into peace.
You were meant to rest in what’s already been spoken.

So if all you can say right now is “I’ll never let go of Your hand,”
That’s enough.
That’s more than enough.
